At dusk, pilgrims gather to worship in Varanasi, the capital of holiness in India. The Ganges River, known as the divine personification of the Hindu goddess “Ganga”, becomes a glowing masterpiece as offerings of Aarti, candles set in a floating box of flower petals, are released into its waters.

Boats carry the pilgrims along the shore to view the holy ghat where nightly rituals are performed and the eternal fire burns. Hundreds of bodies are brought here daily to undergo the purifying flames. The ashes are then sprinkled into the Ganges water with the belief that it removes sin and liberates the soul from the cycle of life and death.

Many sacrifice the last of their finances to ensure their loved ones receive this holy ritual after death. Others bathe in the river or holy pools, attempting to purify themselves. In reality, the Ganges is filthy and ridden with harmful bacteria. Human feces, waste, and dead animals flow from the city streets into the murky waters.

It was eyeopening and heartbreaking to witness these practices firsthand. Rituals I had heard of for years were taking place right in front of me. I could feel the sway of the boat on the Gange as aarti floated by..smell the smoke of the eternal flames as body after body was turned to ashes…hear the cymbals clang as feet danced across the temple grounds…see the misplaced hope as people searched for truth.

We all need purification. Our souls long for it with a deep ache. But, no earthly river or pool can wash away the stains of sin. No pilgrimage or ritual can provide holiness. Redeeming purification can only come from the Living Water found in Jesus Christ.

Pray India finds this truth.

Pray people are sent to tell them.

Pray a new eternal fire is set in their hearts.
